Beyond Skin Deep

a fusion of art and tattooing by local and regional tattoo artists

The practice of tattooing human skin has existed for thousands of years, with the earliest evidence found on remains from the Neolithic era over 5,000 years ago. From ancient and revered cultural practices to sailors using tattoos to identify themselves in the event of a shipwreck, tattooing has served many purposes over the centuries, and picked up stigma, stereotypes, and misconceptions along the way. Over the past several decades, however, a cultural shift has taken place that celebrates tattooing as a form of art and self-expression, and encompasses a wide range of individuals from all walks of life.

The process of tattooing is at an intersection of art and medical procedure, with sterilization and sanitization at the forefront. Procedures of cleanliness are important not only during the process but afterward, to care for the skin, assure proper healing, and ensure the permanence of the artwork. Individuals who receive tattoos understand the importance of this practice – tattoos are an investment in which designs are carefully considered, working closely with the artists to create a meaningful symbol that will last a lifetime.

“Beyond Skin Deep” celebrates the artwork of regional tattoo artists from Bay City, Midland, and Saginaw. Artists spend years perfecting their craft and honing their style, and are sought out by clientele because of it. The artwork displayed demonstrates the creative process of the artists, including sketches and flash (collections of designs available from an artist), photographs of completed work on clients, and a wide array of artwork created in a variety of media beyond human skin, such as painting, collage, digital art, and embroidery.

A public reception will be held on Thursday, May 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. with light refreshments served. A demonstration of the tattooing process by Paul Gomez of Evermore Tattoo Gallery will begin at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Studio 23 welcomes everyone to join us and share your own tattoos and the stories and meanings behind them.
